Falkor didn’t have to think before accepting the quest. He could only see upsides to finding and restoring the mine. It would be good for him, especially if there was mithryn inside. It would be good for the village, providing a source of income for a few miners, and increasing trade. Attracting more Contenders for Rivan wasn’t something he was interested in, but he expected it would be a while before that happened. Hopefully by then he’d either be strong enough to defend himself, or to move on to somewhere else.

Well rested, and having gotten answers from Rivan for all the questions he could remember, Falkor considered returning to the village. He didn’t need the full three days of rest available to him, and he was anxious to find out about the mine. He also wanted to check with Togglebottom about what spells he might have available, and find out how they compared to Rivan’s selection.

“Rivan, just out of curiosity, what would that elven spear cost if I purchased it with gold?”

“Three hundred gold coins. That is less than what it would cost you if you were to purchase such an item in a town or city, as merchants and crafters tend to mark up their prices. I, on the other hand, need gold coins to fund my quest reward pool. Being a remote harborage, few Contenders have purchased items for gold from me, even before the cataclysm. And I am limited as to how much I can draw from the harborage bank.”

Falkor’s ears perked up at that word. “Harborage bank? You have a bank here?”

“The harborage network maintains a bank for the convenience of Contenders, yes. We offer currency deposit services, with a modest interest paid annually on your average balance. We also offer personal storage vaults of varying sizes, for a fee. Loans can be obtained, though the interest rate is high, and terms are short. Contender’s do not have long life expectancies, for the most part. Collateral is usually required.”

“So if I deposit some gold with you, I can access it from any other harborage?” Falkor was smiling widely, an idea forming in his head. One that Togglebottom might not like.

“That is correct. You can also access your storage vault items from any location. Access to the dimensional storage magic of the vault is keyed to your person, not a physical location.”

“Okay that brings up two questions. First, can non-Contenders make use of this bank? The villagers, for example? And second, if I present you with a letter of credit from another bank, will you honor it?”

“Only Contenders may access the harborage bank network, with the exception of pre-authorized factors in their employ. As for the letter of credit, yes we can honor a valid letter of credit. There is a small fee for validating such letters, as we must transport them to the harborage nearest the issuing bank, summon a representative by offering a quest to a local Contender, so that they might confirm validity and availability of funds, then arrange transfer of such funds.
